Such totally different styles…the younger musician will always say James Carter blew the other guy (whoever he’s playing with) away. James is always the loudest, most aggressive, and with a ton of different effects (totally avant-garde). If everyone sounded like James, jazz would be too much and overwhelming. The hardest thing when playing jazz (especially when in a group of similar instruments or trading with another saxophonist) is not to be “affected”. Despite James doing his crazy growl, shrills, biting of the reed…Joshua comes out 100% totally unaffected, plays his own style, and actually plays much more interesting lines (both melodically and harmonically). Amazing performance from both players! Such a great lesson to all musicians. Always be you when you play.

Both are incredible saxophonist! I love Carter's air of confidence. He knows he's a bad muddafugga. But Joshua Redman plays second fiddle to no one. I've heard him do some things on the saxophone that blew my mind. All you can do is enjoy this. Two great musicians dookin it out. 🎷

I was extremely fortunate to experience Carter at the one and only St. Nick's Pub eons ago. I don't like the orchestra behind them here....too much....they drown him out. Seeing him in a small, intimate club is the experience of a lifetime.

It requires many hours of listening, writing out the solos of others, playing them back note for note,then chasing an individual,personal voice. The orchestra adds mass confusion to the mix. But you can hear one player going with actually notes and making them cohere logically; the other squawks, squeals, whistles, bulls his way through the music.
